Spring Bird Houses

Spring is magical! I appreciate it more now that I am living in a place that has four seasons. I love to see all of the bright tulips and trees in bloom after a long, cold winter. It feels great to go on a walk in the sun and listen to all of the birds chirping! Those birds are the inspiration for one of my favorite traditions with my kids - designing bird houses!

Each year, I buy wooden bird houses for the kids to paint and decorate. It is so fun to see the different designs they create. The kids are so excited to hang their bird houses on our trees and watch anxiously for the beautiful birds to come! The kids LOVE it!

If you want to share in this tradition you can find pre-made bird houses at most craft stores. Michael's has some two-story ones that I thought were pretty cool! This year I bought these little ones at Target. Hopefully some small birds can fit inside. If your kids are a little older and you want to be really ambitious, I am sure you could build your own bird house which could also be a really fun project! I have seen DIY kits at Home Depot or Amazon if you want a head start.

Kids Service Project

There are opportunities to serve all around us. This service project was something that I thought my kids would really enjoy!  I bought these containers at the dollar store, of all places, and the seeds were just as inexpensive.  The idea is to plant the flower seeds in the containers and have my kids water and take care of them.

When they are in full bloom, I'll have my kids think of neighbors or friends that could use some flowers to brighten their day. It is a simple idea, but I hope that it will help teach them the value of hard work and service.

Along the way, I plan to use the various stages of the plants' growth to teach my kids. For example, Faith is like a little seed. You need to continually be watering and nourishing your seed every day. For a little while you might not see what your hard work is producing. But as the days and weeks go on you finally see the fruits of all your hard work. BEAUTIFUL flowers!!!

Similarly, we have to continually be watering and nourishing our seed of faith with prayer, scripture study, obeying his commandments and including the Lord into our lives daily. Like the little seed we will one day see the beautiful fruits of labors, our testimony of the SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST
